European Union Commission's
communications department spends 81 million euros promoting the EU
El Mundo has a news feature on plans agreed last
Friday to promote the European Union through a network
of European television to encourage and distribute
programmes related to the EU - in an attempt to create a
European public space and reverse widespread public
apathy towards the activities of Brussels institutions.
The article notes that the EU generates 70% of the
legislation that affects the daily lives of its
citizens. It reports that the EU Directorate
General for Communications spends 81 million euros on
'information' spreading activities and has 665 people
directly involved in communication roles. This is
reinforced by personnel in EU member states - in the
case of Spain, 50 people work in Barcelona and Madrid.
